Two new financial aid programs are now available to low-income college students who are eligible for Federal Pell Grants – the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and the National SMART Grant.

The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) is available to first- and second-year college students who are Pell-eligible (based on data provided on the 2007-08 Federal Application for Student Financial Aid), are U.S. citizens, and are enrolled full time at a two- or four-year degree-granting institution of higher education.  ACG awards are up to $750 for first-year students and $1,300 for second-year students.

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grants, also known as National SMART Grants, are available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.
